Post image for Film Series: Film Shorts by Brian Libby

Curated by Thomas Phillipson of NW Film Center

Over the past decade, Brian Libby has made a succession of acclaimed and award-winning short-form travelogue videos that, as Oregonian reviewer Marc Mohan’s writes, “manage to meld the quotidian and the sublime, or rather perhaps expose the one within the other.” Whether it’s pigeons flocking around a local Portland dairy, a double-decker bus ride in London, the canals of Amsterdam and Copenhagen or the freeways of Los Angeles, Libby views urban and natural settings with a quiet sense of wonder. Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan, who gave Libby a Judge’s Award at the 2009 Northwest Film & Video Festival, calls the work “hypnotic and beautiful.” Brian Libby is also a longtime Portland-based architecture journalist, so he’ll also discuss the ways his writing, videos and still photography overlap as one holistic view of great cities. The show is curated by Thomas Phillipson of the Northwest Film Center, who was among the first to recognize Libby’s films by choosing numerous selections for the Portland International Film Festival as well as a 2007 solo show at the Portland Art Museum.
